A blood purifying treatment given when kidney function is not optimum.
Procedure:
Before dialysis, a catheter is usually implanted either on the arm or in the abdominal cavity, as required.
Fasting may or may not be required before the procedure. Follow the given instructions.
Usually, stay at hospital is not required unless it is acute kidney failure where CRRT is used.
HEMODIALYSIS: This has to be performed thrice a week for at least 3 hours each time.
A surgery may be required to enlarge the veins so as to fix the catheter.
A catheter is fixed, usually in the arm and the blood circulate outside the body through the catheter where it is purified.
PERITONEAL DIALYSIS: This requires implanting a catheter into the abdominal cavity.
A dialysate is used which is a purifying fluid to filter the waste from the blood running through.
This process is usually done overnight.
CONTINUOUS RENAL REPLACEMENT THERAPY (CRRT): This is used for acute kidney failure.
No catheter is implanted for this and the blood is circulated through tubes out of the body to a machine where it is purified.
This process takes long time and is usually performed continuously.
- After hemodialysis, stay is not required and one can go home.
- Strictly follow the guidelines and avoid alcohol, smoking or other OTC drugs and medications.
- Maintain fluid balance and avoid strenuous work or exposure to harsh sun for long time.
